In each Clan a traitor lurks. But in each Clan a hero shall rise! Phoenixstar's prophecy confirms StarClan's fear. They can only stare in disgust at the traitors. Two apprentices in each Clan shall become great...one will be as noble as Firestar...the other as evil as Tigerstar.

The black tom stared down at RiverClan’s apprentice den in disgust. He spat angrily.
“I might’ve known grief would follow me to StarClan!” He growled, shaking with fury. A ginger queen walked to his side and twined her tail around his, murmuring comforting words. A white she-cat with blue eyes stepped forth, her sympathy evident.
“Things shall be alright, Father. RiverClan has faced many dangers before.” The black tom nodded, but still sighed.
“Thank you Gingerfur, Snowstorm.” He said, then his gaze drifted toward the elders’ den. “It must be made known! I must go into his dreams!” He was approaching a similar looking black tom, but a dark tabby stopped him.
“Out of my way, Icefur!” The black tom snapped, but the tabby held his ground.
“This isn’t how we work in StarClan, Moonstar. All we can do is protect them in anyway possible. But we cannot tell them everything. It’ll weaken their spit-second instincts if they know everything that’s going to happen.” Moonstar hissed at the warrior, but nodded.
“Do not worry,” The dark tabby reassured him. “It is our will to keep RiverClan, and all the Clans, safe.”
“It is true, Moonstar. The message disturbs me as much as it disturbs you.” A silver tabby said. Moonstar tore up the ground in front of him.
“You have not felt my pain, Swiftstar. How does this concern you?”
“It concerns us all.” A silver tom said gravely.
“Shadowstar is right.” A silver tabby she-cat named Phoenixstar said. “In each Clan, a traitor lurks. But in each Clan a hero shall rise!”
Chapter 1
“Rainfeather? Are you alright?” The gray apprentice asked anxiously. Rainfeather was the oldest cat in RiverClan, and he was twitching and mewling in his sleep. The apprentice gently prodded him. The black tom’s piercing green eyes snapped open.
“What…oh, it’s you. Hi, Cloverpaw, what do you need?” The elderly cat asked.
“I brought some fresh bedding. Is everything alright? You sounded miserable.” Rainfeather stared blankly at her, then said,
“Oh, I was just dreaming. I saw Moonstar approaching me, but Icefur stopped him.” The black elder’s hackles rose. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he would want to cause sadness for RiverClan in StarClan.” Grief stabbed Cloverpaw’s heart at Rainfeather’s words. Icefur was a warrior who had once betrayed RiverClan, along with a ShadowClan cat Brackenpaw, a WindClan cat Weavepaw, and another RiverClan cat Lostshadow. Still, he had reformed, and became Rainfeather’s mentor. Cloverpaw hadn’t been born to see what trouble the rebels had caused, but she figured Rainfeather was angry at Icefur for another thing: dying first so he’d have to miss him.
“Hey, Cloverpaw! Jayfeather’s taking me on a hunting patrol, and Sunpelt’s coming with us. He’ll probably want you to come.” The young gray she-cat turned to see her best friend, Jadepaw waiting. She hurried over to brown tabby, growling at him in mock annoyance.
“Could you have been any slower? Sunpelt will kill me!”
“That’s a bit harsh for being sort of late for a patrol. And you were the one gabbing with the elders.” The two chatted cheerfully until they reached a golden tabby and silvery blue-gray tom.
“So now you’re here. I thought a hawk might’ve carried you off.” The yellow tabby Sunpelt growled. Cloverpaw murmured an apology to her mentor, used to his gruff behavior. Jayfeather buffeted his side playfully.
“Oh come on, Sunpelt. You know you’re just jealous because you aren’t youthful enough to have fun anymore.” Though he had known his mentor along time, Jadepaw was surprised at his audacity. Then he remembered that Sunpelt had been his mentor, so they knew each other well enough. Grunting, yet seeming to hide a smile, the older warrior slunk off.
