A Coming Darkness
Book 1 in the Risen Warrior
By Rivera Marci
Prologue
The eagle flew through the air, silent and invisible in the night. It was not usual for an eagle to be out at this hour, but his son had run away from home. He remembered realizing he was gone perfectly. For some reason he woke up late at night, to find his son’s nest empty and a quickly scrawled note that read, I’m alright and I’ll be back someday. Don’t worry and don’t try to follow me. ~Khalon. Aleron naturally would not listen to the message. Immediately he left to go after him. Khalon would get himself killed. That day before the eagle had told him he wanted to be a warrior.
At first, Aleron had taken that statement lightly. He had thought he meant someday he wanted to be a warrior. But Khalon said the he was going to go off as soon as possible. Aleron had told him the soonest possible was when he grew up, but he’d gladly try to teach him some fighting skills. Khalon however insisted he was ready now. He said goodbye, telling his family he would go find a sword maker to forge him a weapon, and then travel the world, fighting any evil. Aleron told him he was behaving like a hatchling with those fanciful plans. Thinking he could go fight when he had barely learned to fly! That had infuriated his son. Khalon said that he wasn’t acting like a hatchling…Aleron was treating him like one, and into a small cave on the mountain where Aleron, Khalon, and the rest of their family lived. The older eagle felt guilty, taking most of the blame, though Khalon was the one who was most at fault.
Suddenly a noise distracted Aleron. It was a fluttering of wings. Not like a birds, it was way too loud a fluttering. He listened carefully. It was that of…a bat’s. The eagle’s heart quickened. They could be vampire bats. Vampire bats were evil creatures of the Darkener, the devil himself, which would kill a creature just to watch them die. And if that wasn’t bad enough, they had an even more brutal way of killing their victims. They did it by drinking their blood. It was a terrible way to die.
Aleron tried to calm himself. Not all bats were vampire bats. And even if it was, maybe it wasn’t Decessus. Aleron’s heart didn’t just speed up; he trembled, and had to perch on a heavy branch of a nearby oak tree. Decessus were more than just vampire bats. They were truly creatures of the Darkener. They had a stronger lust for killing, and were allies with everything evil. Their leader was said to be Count Vladimir Gustof. Aleron flinched. It was frightening to think of that name at night. Gustof was said to be a big black bat, with red eyes. Or more appropriately, eye. One of his eyes had a jagged scar going across it, making him look more menacing.
“Golden Lord,” Aleron prayed. “Don’t let it be him. And if it must be, keep Khalon safe.”
“The Golden Lord can’t help you now.” A menacing voice growled. Aleron swung around and gasped. It was a black bat, with red eyes…and there was a scar across his left one. Aleron was larger, but he knew he didn’t stand a chance if there was a fight. All the bat needed to do was bite him once.
“Now if you cooperate, you’ll live. Resist and you’ll die. Is that clear?” Aleron nodded. It would be best to obey the bat; he knew that without the threats.
“I just have one question,” The eagle asked, and swallowed. “Are you Count Vladimir Gustof?” He almost knew what the answer would be, but he wanted to be sure.
“I am! I have von question also. Have you seen a young eagle?” The evil bat asked. Aleron’s stomach dropped.
“What does that matter to you?” He demanded. The bat glared, and grabbed his throat in his claws.
“Do not question me. Just answer. Have you seen a young eagle? If you must know, I’ll tell you. I…vant…him…dead.” Count Gustof growled. Aleron stared into the creature’s eyes challengingly, not a trace of fear in his black eyes.
“If that’s your reason, I haven’t!” Aleron spat defiantly. The Decessus leader shook his head to get rid of the creature’s saliva.
“You are cooperative, but also lying. You must be punished.”
